NEW GREAT SCORES TO OUR ICONS WINES
By James Molesworth
According to Wine Spectator, “Chile´s 2005 vintage is a strong one, particularly for the reds. And in strong vintages, great wineries really pick up their game, as the classic releases from Viña Almaviva and Viña Montes here ably demonstrate. Both of their flagship bottlings rely on Cabernet Sauvignon, with Almaviva´s showing the Maipo profile of loam and tar, while Montes Alpha M shows the more mineral and currant side of the Colchagua valley.
95 Points: Montes Alpha M 2005, Santa Cruz, Colchagua Valley, $93: “Very sleek and refined, but with loads in reserve, this shows layers of mocha, espresso, bittersweet coffee, mineral and currant paste all framed by dense but supersupple tannins. Beautifully rendered, and the best vintage yet for this winery's flagship wine. Best from 2009 through 2015. 4,500 cases made.“ —J.M. Highly Recommended

WINE OF THE WEEK: MONTES ALPHA M 2005
By Stacy Slinkard
“The Montes Alpha "M" was recently dubbed "favorite red wine" at our most recent wine tasting. Not to mention that Montes Alpha "M" has gained international recognition for being an award winning, ultra-premium Chilean red wine.
It's no surprise, as this is a tip top Bordeaux-style blend consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), Cabernet Franc (10%), Merlot and Petit Verdot (both pitching in 5%). This wine is full-bodied and rich, with an intensity that resonates with the well structured tannins. The color is bold a mix of ruby red and magenta on the edge.
The nose exposes mint, berry and a trace of mocha. The palate profile is peppery, with coffee and currant, deep vanilla and delightfully concentrated fruit - plum, cherry and blackberry to be more specific. Keep in mind that while this wine is a fantastic drink now, it will only get better as it matures with additional years (consider aging for 15+ years). Give it a go with roasted game, lamb and Brie or Gouda.“ Montes Alpha M 2005 (Chile) $80.

WINE FROM APALTA AND LATE HARVEST
By Eugenio García
“There is no doubt that our sommelier, Eugenio García, treated himself in the first issue of the year of Vinos & Más. The scores, which may be the highest that he has ever given, show his penchant for the Apalta area, the upper crust of the Colchagua Valley and a region that is destined to produce some of Chile’s best reds-robust wines, children of the sun and the heat. To balance it out, there is a selection of dessert wines that includes some interesting selections from our country. They are worth looking into.
95 points: Montes Alpha M 2005
“An arrogant, almost aristocratic wine that has slowly evolved in the bottle. Given its overwhelming balance, everything seems to be in its place. The spiced, tobacco and cedar notes stand out along with touches of jam and red and black fruits that show themselves readily. In short, this is a seriously “supped up” Montes. Pair with exotic dishes like pheasant.”

THREE RECOMMENDED MONTES WINES IN VIETNAM
By Darren W. Gall
…“Below we match some classic Chilean dishes to Chile‘s three greatest wines.
Montes Alpha M is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (80 per cent), Merlot (10 per cent), Cabernet Franc (5 per cent) and Petit Verdot (5 per cent). A powerful, perfectly balanced, full-bodied wine with a superbly voluptuous palate, it is best matched with Patagonian lamb, spit-roasted on a wood fire.”

ROBERT PARKER’S WINE ADVOCATE: GREAT RATINGS
Top scores, many surpassing 90 points, have been given to Montes by the USA´s Robert Parker (The Wine Advocate). In his article “Chile: Still a Work in Progress“, Parker considers Montes as one of the wineries that ‘has figured out how to produce terrific red wines at bargain prices“. He also emphasizes, amongst the very top Chilean wines, our Montes Alpha M as one of the world-class Bordeaux-style wines, elegant and for long time cellaring.
Ratings granted to our Montes wines were as follows:
93 Points: Montes Alpha M 2005. “Purple-colored, it offers a classic Pauillac-like nose of pain grillé, vanilla, tobacco, earth notes, black currant, and blackberry. This leads to a full-bodied wine which maintains a sense of elegance. Layered with plenty of ripe fruit, there is enough tannin to support 5-7 years of further bottle aging. Well balanced with a long, firm finish, should be at its best from 2015 to 2030.”
THE WINE BUZZ, U.S.A., November/December 2008
2008 NOTABLE WINES
Montes Alpha M 2005: “Our favorite wines from Chile are reds, and this is right up at the pinnacle. A Bordeaux-style blend, it´s powerful without being massive, with beautiful structure and complex flavors of cassis, dried dark fruit, spice and dark chocolate – an aristocrat.”
