House of Wine
House of Wine – About
House of Wine

When great-great-grandfather Panagiotis Mantafounis founded his winery and export company "Maison du Vin" on the island of Samos in 1873 — exporting the famous Samian wines he bottled in Karlovassi to Belgium and the Netherlands — he surely never imagined that 136 years later his great-grandchildren would inherit both his pioneering ideas and his love of fine, quality wine.

It is precisely those ideas, that love, which today unites his great-grandchildren — young people with a passion for technology — together with experienced sommeliers, seasoned marketers, and executives with long-standing knowledge of the market, in an equally pioneering and enthusiastic endeavour: the creation of a website that meets both the functional needs of online retail and the discerning tastes of wine lovers and friends. A website dedicated to promoting Greek wine products in the Greek and international market, and to acquainting Greek wine enthusiasts with the world's wine production, grape varieties, and the most celebrated wine-producing countries on earth.

Our ambition is to serve our friends and customers properly — and by "properly" we mean both keeping you consistently informed and delivering flawlessly on your expectations in terms of selection, quality, speed of delivery, reliability, and, of course, pricing.

Through consistent communication, we aim both to gradually introduce wine newcomers to the secrets of quality wine, and to inform and exchange views with those already well-versed in its pleasures. At House of Wine you will not find the "standard" wine and producer write-ups, the "careful" and bland assessments. We will not try to sell you something we would not put on our own table. On the contrary, through honest and fair evaluation, the recommendations of our experts, and the opinions of our friends and customers, we will promote those products that truly deserve your attention — we give "value" to both your money and your opinion.

With outstanding service, we aim to free you from anything that might stand in the way of enjoying the products you order from us. All House of Wine products will reach your chosen destination, on the day and at the time you select, in the right packaging, and will be delivered to you and your friends with the courtesy that the product we have chosen to represent deserves. We know the intense pace of modern life — we live and work within it — and we will do our very best to serve you without added stress or complications. We will always be here, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, dedicated to your service, ready to help you choose the right wine — whether for your everyday pleasure, a successful dinner with friends, a corporate event, or the impeccable presentation and quality of your professional and corporate gifts.

We did not create the House of Wine website as a mere "extension" of an existing wine shop — as the obligatory digital sideshow of the internet age. Instead, we built from the ground up a business that operates exclusively online, following the rules of digital communication and the demands of cyberspace and the people who inhabit it. The most advanced information technology comes together with all of our love for quality wine products. We aspire to replicate in Greece the tremendous success of equivalent international websites.

We are confident that our effort will find the same response in our country from the many friends who share with us the same "love." We promise to honour that shared love, and the trust you place in us.

We promise it to you — and to great-great-grandfather Panagiotis...

At 40 Ethnikis Antistaseos Street in Halandri, House of Wine, the largest online wine and spirits store in Greece, created the largest “physical” wine shop in the country, combining the best of both “worlds” and introducing a new concept in the sale and enjoyment of wine and spirits.

Our goal was for the enjoyment of wine to begin from the very moment of purchase. At House of Wine, the sales process becomes a pleasure, starting with the tasting of 6-8 wines every week, completely free of charge! New wines or spirits, award-winning wines from international competitions, and wines everyone is talking about are available for you to taste before you buy! That is why a fully equipped private wine bar, with a huge 20-seat counter, dominates the space... A bright, cheerful place that breaks away from the stereotype of the dark wine cellar of past centuries. At House of Wine, the sun and the light never “set,” since they do not affect the wines! These rest in ideal conditions of temperature, lighting, and humidity: the ageing wines and Fine Wines in the specially designed climate-controlled internal “tower” on the ground floor, and the rest in the underground cellars.

At the same time, the wine selection is enormous, broader and easier to navigate than in any conventional wine shop, thanks to the 3 electronic tablets through which, with the help of our specialized associates, the customer can browse more than 1,100 labels of Greek and international wines and easily search for the wine they want using filters that include producer, vintage, origin, color, and many other product characteristics—something impossible in traditional wine shops. For each product, the information provided is extremely detailed and includes a full description, producer profile, composition, winemaking conditions, grape varieties, characteristics, competition awards, and food pairings. Choosing wine is a “game” — both literally and figuratively — at House of Wine, whether in its online or physical store!

Anything related to wine and spirits can be found at House of Wine: In addition to 1,100+ wine labels from Greece and around the world, at House of Wine you will also find older vintages, 65+ dessert / sweet wines, 100+ sparkling wines from around the world and selected Champagnes, 120+ beer labels, 160 fine whiskies, blends, malts, bourbons, rare and collectible editions, all spirits, 50+ vodkas, 50+ rums, 70+ cognacs and brandies, gins, tequilas, grappas, exceptional ready-to-drink cocktails and all their ingredients, as well as ouzos, tsipouros, raki, and selected collections. At the same time, all wine and spirits accessories are here too: 50+ glasses, decanters, corkscrews, champagne buckets, wine aerators, stoppers, Drop Stops, Ice Bags, and bottle storage systems. Also books about wine and even... cosmetics made from wine and grapes!

Wine and spirits accompaniments, as well as gourmet products, complete the wine experience: Aged vinegars, mustards, spices, herbs, sauces, chocolates, as well as coffee, tea...

At House of Wine you will find the largest gift collection: Corporate gifts, personal gifts, gifts to send, or gifts to take with you! Premium gifts, gifts for every budget. You can also choose the packaging, the items your gift will include, the decoration, and create your own personal and unique gift!

Finally, here you will find our specialized staff—our associates and yours too—in a warm, bright, cheerful, and friendly environment, ready to help you make your choice with a smile, whether you are a wine “expert” or seeing a bottle for the first time in your life!

At House of Wine, the enjoyment of wine begins with the purchase! Or simply with your visit…

We look forward to welcoming you!

The House of Wine Team

Michalis Pikounis

Michalis Pikounis – Chairman & Chief Executive Officer

Michalis Pikounis was born in Athens in October 1975. After completing secondary school and Year 10 at Kostea-Geitona Schools, he attended the International Baccalaureate programme at Moraitis School, graduating in 1993. He went on to study at the University of Edinburgh, earning a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science & Management Science, and completed his education with a Master's in Management from the London School of Economics (1998).

He subsequently joined Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) in London, where he remained for two years before requesting a transfer to the firm's Athens office, where he spent a further year. During those three years he worked on a series of projects in the telecommunications and internet sectors for clients including Cable & Wireless (London), OTE, and Cosmote.

After completing his military service in the Hellenic Navy, he spent the following five years at ATKOSoft — initially as a management consultant (one year) and then as Director of Research and Project Implementation (four years).

Since June 2009, Michalis Pikounis has been exclusively focused on House of Wine as General Manager, overseeing everything from its conception through to daily operations. He is married with two children.

Giovanna Lykou

Giovanna Lykou – Catalogue Manager – Exclusive Club Coordinator

Giovanna Lykou was born and raised in Athens. She swam non-stop until the age of 19 and, having covered a distance equal to the circumference of the Earth, she finally stopped — and savoured her first glass of wine.

She graduated from the Department of History and Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, specialising in Art History with an emphasis on Contemporary Art. She studied Sommellerie to be certain of what to drink on every occasion, and so enchanted by that journey, she made it her mission to make wine accessible to everyone.

She has worked as a sommelier in some of the most important wine bars and fine-dining restaurants in the country, with the highlight being her three-year tenure at the two-Michelin-star restaurant Spondi. She is a certified Sherry Educator, having received an honorary distinction and award for excellence in blind tasting from the Consejo Regulador de la D.O. "Jerez Xérès Sherry." She is also a certified spirits educator and has represented acclaimed companies and products throughout her professional career. For the past four years she has been a lecturer in the sommellerie programme at LE MONDE school, from which she herself graduated. Her relationship with wine and spirits is expressed in words across various websites and publications, with her favourite being her column for the sommelier section of Kathimerini newspaper. She has made appearances on radio and television, and has organised presentations, tastings, and educational events.

She loves talking about all of this but insists on doing so with humour and self-deprecation. She wishes she could speak every language in the world and, with the press of a button, find herself in Brooke Square on Skyros, gazing out at the sea. She toasts to it at every opportunity.

Maria Kefala

Maria Kefala – Trade Marketing & Business Development Manager

Maria Kefala was born and raised in Nafplio. She graduated from the Department of Tourism Business Management at the Technological Educational Institute of Heraklion, Crete.

In 2004, prompted by a job advertisement whose newspaper clipping she still keeps, she began working at one of the largest wine and spirits production, import, and distribution companies in Greece. And so her journey into the magical world of wine began.

Alongside her career she furthered her wine education, obtaining the WSET Foundation and Intermediate Certificates as well as the WSET HESTIA Advanced Certificate, in addition to a Digital Marketing qualification — with the goal of combining two great passions: wine and technology.

She has worked at leading wine production, trade, and distribution companies and has managed a significant portfolio of wineries from around the world.

Since 2020 she has been actively involved in the creation and development of the innovative platform oensights.com, which collects, analyses, and presents data from the Greek and global wine ecosystem for wine industry professionals.

Kyriakos Kontogiorgis

Kyriakos Kontogiorgis – Spirits Consultant

Kyriakos Kontogiorgis has been involved with wines and spirits since 1992. He owns a company specialising in the trade of these products and is also a well-known collector of whisky and cognac. He has been a regular contributor to Whisky Magazine for a number of years and maintains ongoing relationships with all the major whisky auction houses, including Christie's, McTear's, and Bonhams. His engagement of over 22 years in this field has given him deep and comprehensive expertise in whisky, spanning both technical knowledge and historical detail.
