Facundo Bacardi started the revolution in the spirits industry in 1862 when he began production in 1862 in Santiago, Cuba. It is said that the bat in the Bacardi symbol comes from the fruit bats at the family's distillery in Santiago.
He was the first to attempt to soften the character of rum by filtering it through activated carbon filters, and the first to produce white rum.
Today the Bacardi empire operates from Puerto Rico.
