Suntory Yamazaki Distillers Reserve

The Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve is the most accessible expression of the iconic Yamazaki distillery, the first and oldest malt whisky distillery in Japan. This is an age statement-free single malt bottled at 43%, combining the fruity character of Yamazaki with the unique elegance of Japanese Mizunara oak. The aging process includes a combination of different types of casks, such as American oak, sherry casks, and Mizunara, providing the whisky with layers of aromas and flavors without weighing down the overall profile. 

On the nose, it is clean, fresh, and aromatic, with strawberry, cherry, red fruits, white flowers, and subtle spice notes from the Mizunara. On the palate, it appears soft and refined, with raspberry, white peach, hints of coconut, vanilla, and sweet wood, while as it opens in the glass, it reveals more fruity sweetness and a light spicy dimension. The finish is clean, sweet, and elegant, with vanilla, cinnamon, and a distinctive Japanese sense of balance. An excellent introductory Yamazaki, but also a whisky that clearly shows why Japanese single malt has gained such a devoted following.
