WINE SPECTATOR INSIDER, U.S.A., October 2008
MONTES ALPHA SYRAH, AN EXCELLENT WINE BY WINE SPECTATOR Insider, a weekly publication of Wine Spectator for members only, is a newsletter that features classic-rated red, white and dessert wines from an eclectic mix of wine regions. This week James Molesworth finds four excellent Syrahs from Chile, and our Montes Alpha Syrah 2006 is one of them. From Colchagua Valley, Apalta Vineyard, 91 points, $28, 7,500 cases imported. “This is richly layered, with ambitiously styled fig, mocha, espresso and bittersweet cocoa, all backed by a lush beam of boysenberry fruit. Fleshy and toasty through the finish, with the dark fruit lingering nicely in the background. Super delicious. Drink now through 2010.—J.M.”

Wine Ratings
90 Points: Montes Alpha Syrah 2006, Colchagua Valley, ($25). “Ruby-red. Energetic cherry-cola and raspberry aromas offer impressive clarity and a suave floral overtone. Sweet red and dark berry liqueur flavors are complemented by sexy vanillin oak and Asian spices, with supple tannins carrying through the finish. Emphatically modern and quite seductive.”

CHILEAN WINES BEST IN SHOW AT LOS ANGELES (U.S.A) TASTING “The diplomatic corps recently organized a wine tasting in Los Angeles, California. During the event, which featured selections from over 10 countries, Montes wines were chosen as among the best by two sommeliers. Chile was represented by Montes Limited Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Leyda Vineyard, and Montes Alpha Syrah 2006. The tasting featured the participation of Corie Brown, Wine Writer, Los Angeles Times; Patrick Comiskey, Senior Contributor, Wines & Spirits and Los Angeles Times; and Heather John, Senior Editor and Wine Writer, Bon Appétit; as well as 40 representatives of consulates and commercial offices who also took part in the blind tasting. Patrick Comiskey chose Montes as best in show for the reds. The winery’s entry also was selected as the top wine in the white category by Corie Brown and Patrick Comiskey along with the Slovenian wine Ribolla Gialla 2004 Simci Goriska. Both critics indicated that they could not identify the country of origin but that it was a cleanly made New World wine that was classic and fresh with notes of fruit and lemon.”

A GREAT WINE
By Begoña Uranga
“There has been a lot of news over the past few weeks. One of the highlights is the launch of Montes Alpha Syrah 2006, an exceptional wine that experts have received with enthusiasm. This Syrah is produced in the Apalta Valley, whose characteristics are very similar to those of the Rhône Region of France. The tasting notes define it as ruby red with subtle purple notes. The bouquet shows it to be a wine of great elegance and concentration, with notes of black fruit, leather and spices accompanied by aromas of tobacco and chocolate courtesy of the 12 months that the wine was aged in French oak barrels. It is highly concentrated and smooth, with soft, silky tannins and a long and pleasant finish. Ideal for exotic meats, with a potential for 10 years in the cellar. This is definitely a wine to experience.”

QUE PASA MAGAZINE, Chile, April 18, 2008
A NEW CLASSIC
Montes Alpha Syrah 2006: “Though it is a young winery with a line of wines that is also under 30, the Alpha of Montes wines are already a classic. They have an identifiable label, a style that is easy to recognized, and they have positioned themselves quickly on the market. Now it is the 2006 Syrah from Apalta’s turn. This wine speaks the same language as its sisters, revealing notes of black and ripe fruit, like blackberries, as well as black mineral like graphite. In general, this is a demanding wine with a fairly high alcohol content and wood that has yet to completely settle into itself. This is an interesting selection with stimuli that seem to snowball. It becomes more complex and complete with every sip, full of taste textures that will become more and more balanced over time. Today, Alpha Syrah 2006 should be served with roast meat seasoned with black pepper that complements its potency and a sweet onion puree that will help smooth out the rough edges. Tomorrow, it can be paired with a juicy skirt steak with yucca fries. Why not? The new classics are for today, tomorrow and the day after.”

GOLD MEDAL TO OUR SYRAH IN SINGAPORE
Montes Alpha Syrah 2006 won a Gold Medal in the 10th Lianhe Zaobao Wine Review Challenge 2008, as well as Best Wine Award in the New World Syrah category. The following wines also won awards in different categories: Montes Alpha Chardonnay 2006 in Oaked Chardonnay category; Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 in New World Cabernet Sauvignon category and Montes Limited Selection Pinot Noir 2007 in Pinot Noir category.
